Four years ago, I ran into the board president and Head of School at a coffee shop โ€” just days after being elected to the Board of Trustees.

The board president smiled and said,

โ€œ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚โ€™๐—น๐—น ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜.โ€

I froze. I said nothing. (I hadnโ€™t had my coffee, and witty comebacks werenโ€™t happening.)

The Head of School tried to save the moment with a joke:

โ€œ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น, ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ป.โ€

Inside, I was thinking: Why would he say that? He doesnโ€™t even know me yet.

Fast forward: Iโ€™ve just been elected president of that board.

The lesson? Sometimes others see your potential before you do.

Next time someone offers a bold compliment, I hope Iโ€™ll say:
